Comparing a Studio Session to The Enlightenment

Image
Comparing a work of art today to The Enlightenment takes a lot of thought. Instead of comparing a painting or drawing I want to compare the art of creating something and being in the moment/making and changing decisions. I'm going to compare a group of rappers in the studio creating a song to the philosophers in The Enlightenment. In The Enlightenment at one point, the philosophers gathered and created the first encyclopedia that we still use today even though it has been much updated since then. When they were creating the encyclopedia, they all worked together to agree and disagree on what was right or wrong and what should be included or not. The encyclopedia was an art created by multiple different artists. The same things happen in the studio when music artists come together on a song. They all hear the beat and start writing or have their verse already written. Then each person sings or raps their verse many times over and over. Sometimes they will do many dif...

The Enlightenment Infographic

Image
Below is the link to my infographic where you will learn a little bit about The Enlightenment. This was a huge movement that took place in the 17th and 18 centuries. In the picture you see below you will notice a crowd of people in a salon listening to  Orphan of China. https://www.canva.com/design/DAEJR-RhBWY/hi5WqvxU9_Btsng0bEJECQ/view?utm_content=DAEJR-RhBWY&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=sharebutton  Source: Wikipedia

Thoughts In AtAP

Image
For my course project I'm thinking about trying to do something around the topic of sports. I'm trying to figure out a way of making it relevant and usable for the project though. I don't feel like I could connect with and engage with any of the options that were suggested in the prompt so I am going to try and find a way to make something with sports relevant to this assignments' topic. If anyone has any suggestions on how I could do so and make it work, please let me know! I'm open to any suggestions. I think this could be a fun project if I get to research something that I'm actually interested in so I'm thinking about something with sports. I'd love to make it around hockey, racing, fighting, or golf but I'm open to anything. I'm not sure what the best website platform to use is either so any thoughts there would help too.  Source: https://www.footprintstofitness.com/blog/posts/scatterbrained

My Experiences In Constructive Criticism, Feedback and Figuring Out How To Take It

Image
I want to go off the beaten path for this entry and talk about my personal experience with feedback and constructive criticism. Growing up as the oldest child my dad always had high expectations for me and I struggled with that. I felt that everything I did always had something wrong with it and even when I did what I was asked, it was never enough to satisfy. Looking back on it today, I couldn't be happier that he raised me the way he did. He has always pushed me to be the best version of myself, even when it felt like I could just never do enough to satisfy. It wasn't that I wasn't doing enough, it was that he wanted to push me to see my full potential and if I would ever give up on anything. Those are the type of things that you don't realize as a kid but grow to appreciate as you get older.      I felt a lot of the same pressure from him in hockey. I started playing goalie a bit later than most do. I struggled a lot with self confidence and always...

Finding Relatable Writing In 'How music shapes the way we play video games, by Kellen Beck'

Image
In the article: How music shapes the way we play video games,  by Kellen Beck, I find it super interesting where they talk about video games having 3 componen ts. " Video games consist of three components. The first two, visuals and interactivity, form the essential core of games, but the third component, sound, and specifically music, transforms games into something beyond an activity. Music can turn games into unforgettable experiences." I find this statement interesting because I personally feel that this applies to more than just video games. For me, music and sound transforms anything you're doing in life into something more magical. For example, when I'm playing hockey and the crowd is going crazy, the sound changes the whole feeling of the game for everyone in the building, no matter if you're playing or not. When a good song comes on in between plays, it calms me down and gets me focused on the next play and not what has already happened in the game. ...

Looking Into One Of The Largest Cultural Movements In Over 10 Years - Black Lives Matter

Image
Every time you go into social media you see something new about one of two things; Corona virus and Black Lives Matter. I'd never looked too far into Black Lives Matter until early this year when George Floyd was killed and the movement blew up. I listen to a lot of rap music and when I heard Lil Baby's song The Bigger Picture I couldn't help but look further into the movement with hearing how powerful his song was. When I saw the prompt for this section of the weekly work I knew exactly what I was going to research more. From the first time you hear this song and listen closely to all the lyrics, it blows your mind. I had to listen to the song four or five times before I understood the whole story all the way through it is that incredible of a song. I break down the song a bit more in my Padlet you can find here https://padlet.com/carboc4/thebiggerpicturelilbaby .      Reading more about cultural movements I really noticed how big Black Lives Ma...

Giving Feedback in Art

Giving feedback can be tough. You don't want to be too hard on someone and sound mean, don't want to praise them without purpose and don't want to make them second guess their whole work of art. What is feedback? According to Grant Wiggins, President of Authentic Education,  " Feedback is useful information about the effects of an action in light of a goal." This means that in commenting on someone's work you have a goal in mind of them changing, adding or subtracting something from their art to improve the end product.       In doing so, you want to present your ideas to the writer without "being a jerk". Adam Grant a Wharton  Pro fessor suggests that you can start your feedback with these 19 words, " I’m giving you these comments because I have very high expectations and I know that you can reach them." This wouldn't work in all scenarios of our class for example, right now we don't know each other so we're not sure of ...

Week 1: This I Believe: Respect

Image
I believe that respect is something every kid should be raised to learn and have. Without respect you will grow up to be a person that nobody wants to be around. Success comes to people who have respect.  Six years ago I had two players on my hockey team, Andrew and Eric. They were both good players but Andrew thought he was much better. Over the course of the season Andrew started to bully Eric to try and get him off his game. Andrew was playing great but our coach found out about his antics.  Coach Jack approached the two players separately about the situation. Andrew denied that he had been bullying Eric and complained that Eric hadn't been treating him well. Coach Jack proceeded to then talk to Eric. Eric denied that Andrew had been bullying him but when coach Jack asked if he had been treating Andrew unfairly, he replied with, "No I don't think I have been but if I was I'll apologize to him".  The next time Eric saw Andrew he apologized to him and explained ...

Week 1: Avatar of the Carbonator

Image
Hello class, my name is Connor Carbo and I'm a second semester freshman at Wentworth. I came to school in January to start my college career. I play on the men's Ice Hockey team here as well! My Avatar nickname for the semester is going to be "Carbonator". My last name, as you already know, is Carbo and I think the combination with terminator is an interesting mix. I look forward to virtually meeting everyone and getting to know you through our work this semester. I spend my summers at the race track, fishing and playing a lot of cornhole with my friends. Over the summer I got seriously involved with cornhole as I wake up and go to bed wanting to throw one more bag. I bought my own boards and got bags just to practice by myself at home. It might be an addiction but for now I'll call it a hobby. I spend a lot of time at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, New Hampshire with my family. My parents have a camper that we leave there for the summer and w...
