Comparing a Studio Session to The Enlightenment
Comparing a work of art today to The Enlightenment takes a lot of thought. Instead of comparing a painting or drawing I want to compare the art of creating something and being in the moment/making and changing decisions. I'm going to compare a group of rappers in the studio creating a song to the philosophers in The Enlightenment. In The Enlightenment at one point, the philosophers gathered and created the first encyclopedia that we still use today even though it has been much updated since then. When they were creating the encyclopedia, they all worked together to agree and disagree on what was right or wrong and what should be included or not. The encyclopedia was an art created by multiple different artists. The same things happen in the studio when music artists come together on a song. They all hear the beat and start writing or have their verse already written. Then each person sings or raps their verse many times over and over. Sometimes they will do many different verses and pick the one they like most for the song. Once everybody does their verse, the producer puts everything together into the song and plays the song for everybody in the room many times, while making edits the whole time. The music artists will have the producer add things in or take things out while listening to the song. Once everybody is happy they will send the song to the record label and wait for it to be released to the public. This must have happened in The Enlightenment as well where they didn't finalize the encyclopedia until everybody agreed that it was finished.
This is such a cool comparison! I love this idea of collaborative creation and the link between philosophers and rappers. As you imply here, rappers (and perhaps musicians in general) are our modern day, popular philosophers. I think you can find just as much wisdom in some rap music as you can in traditional philosophy!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting comparison and I see it clearly. You have the people back then changing the culture by separating from England and creating a new government and you have rappers today changing the culture that is produced with their music. I thought of comparing literature back then to government now but this was completely different from what I read the prompt and I love it. It's very creative and unique to compare a studio group with philosophers. Very well done.
ReplyDeleteVery cool comparison! Not a lot of people understand what the process is like to just create a rap or even a song. The important figures in the enlightment era definitely went through the same process to create their versions of art. I also agree that musicians in this day age are the modern philosophers preaching themselves through their music. Who is on your list for the greatest rappers of all time?

ReplyDeleteHey Connor! I thought this was a very interesting comparison, but it made a lot of sense as you went on. I agree with your view on the importance of collaboration during the enlightenment or making a song. Collaboration is a huge key to success in almost any situation. This allows for small mistakes to be caught and for new ideas to come to the forefront. And just like how a song goes through multiple “layers” or people, the ideas of the enlightenment did as well.
