Looking Into One Of The Largest Cultural Movements In Over 10 Years - Black Lives Matter

Every time you go into social media you see something new about one of two things; Corona virus and Black Lives Matter. I'd never looked too far into Black Lives Matter until early this year when George Floyd was killed and the movement blew up. I listen to a lot of rap music and when I heard Lil Baby's song The Bigger Picture I couldn't help but look further into the movement with hearing how powerful his song was. When I saw the prompt for this section of the weekly work I knew exactly what I was going to research more. From the first time you hear this song and listen closely to all the lyrics, it blows your mind. I had to listen to the song four or five times before I understood the whole story all the way through it is that incredible of a song. I break down the song a bit more in my Padlet you can find here https://padlet.com/carboc4/thebiggerpicturelilbaby .

Reading more about cultural movements I really noticed how big Black Lives Matter is this year and the potential they have to make a difference. We haven't had a cultural movement this big since the internet, cellphones, Apple and those were on a completely different scale. Black Lives Matter is just people coming together looking for change and not stopping until they get it. I believe that they go off the rails sometimes with riots, looting and some protests but I respect how many people in America have come together to force change.

The Bigger Picture is a great example of a modern work of art addressing a massive current issue. I think that people with a platform, or a highly respected artist in their field, such as Lil Baby as a rapper, can use their platform to get more out of their art than just a pretty picture. I think Lil Baby used that philosophy in order to do everything he could to make a change, including donating a percentage of his proceeds from the song to Black Lives Matter. This is unique to me because a lot of people like to sit back and watch, but say they are involved instead of getting on their feet and getting involved. It takes a special artist to put aside everything they are working on to create something new and try to make a change in the world.

  1. Music has always played such a big role in protest and challenging society to change; the current BLM movement is no different! I hadn't heard of this artist or song, so I was interested to learn more about it through your snap and post here.. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Great post! I couldn't agree more and Lil Baby's single definitely conveys the bigger idea that social injustice needs to be put to an end and its going to take some time. He definitely took advantage of his platform to speak out against systematic racism. I also agree, that the riots and looting are out of control, but I respect the movement and the unity of races in the U.S.

  3. Hey Connor, nice post. I agree that with all that is going on right now that music is key to making change. I have a similar mindset to you and music was a big part that encouraged me to really look deeper into the movement and decide that change is absolutly necessary. I don't listen to a ton of Lil Baby, but i'm definetly gonna check that song out.
