Analyzing Art From the Postmodernism Era
I know I used this figure for my picture representing my last blog post but I am very interested in the Michael Jackson and Bubbles sculpture by artist Jeff Koons. I think that this is a very interesting piece of work that consists of a style that is still greatly used in the world of art today. The sculpture was made while Michael Jackson was at the peak of his career and was meant to portray him as a "god-like icon"(Art Story) by painting him in all gold and resting on a bed of flowers. I find that this style is used all the time still as actors, music artists, athletes and more are at the peak of their respected careers. I think that Sports Illustrated does a great amount of this with their naked athlete editions and swimsuit models. When they create these magazines they tend to choose people that are in the peak of or very respected in their career in order to get people to view and subscribe to their magazine but also to promote the superstars. I find this art very smart on both sides of the superstars and the magazine company by bringing each other more viewers and portraying people somewhat as bigger than what they are. In the Michael Jackson and Bubbles art, the purpose is to appeal to taste and pop culture where as, in the world today most people are invested in pop culture in some type of way whether they agree with it and enjoy it or they are against it and try to change it. Either way, postmodern art is still used all the time in today's world.

Hello Connor,
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting how you expanded upon the sentiment of this singular piece of artwork and connected it to the idolization of celebrities in general. It is certainly true that athletes, actors, and other pop culture figures are put up on a pedestal today.
Hi connor,
ReplyDeleteI do think it's cool that you mentioned that this type of art style is used at the peak of celeberties careers like actors and msuic artists and athletes. I do agree that this particular art style is for those top celeberties so more people can view it.
