Analysis of Futurism from the Modernism Era

Futurism was, and still is, a very interesting artistic movement in the Modernism era. Britannica states that Futurism, "likened humans to machines and vice versa in order to embrace change, speed, and innovation in society while discarding artistic and cultural forms and traditions of the past." We still use this in the world every day today. We are always creating new machines and trying to improve everything in the world while leaving old methods behind. In the art forms of the Modernism era the artists would incorporate many vehicles and machinery and even have entire works of art solely of the vehicles and machines. They were focused on what they believed was the future of the world and they were right. Today we are always thinking about what the future could hold for us, especially in the middle of this pandemic. For example, Elon Musk is working on a microchip for humans and has just tested on a pigs brain. So far they are collecting data but I wouldn't be surprised to see something happen in the future involving microchips to track different aspects of the human brain. Overall Futurism is a great part of the world today in the sense that we are always looking to improve and make things easier in the world with the help of technology and art. We are always focused on the future and what it could hold for us so Futurism still greatly plays into the world today, even if it has many differences to how we viewed it in the Modernism era to today.

  1. Hey Connor, the topic you chose for your analysis is really neat. I think futurism is a very interesting and unique art style that occurred during the Modern era. The focus the movement had on the speed and power of technology can definitely be applied to today’s society where developments are constantly being made. I agree that Elon Musk is doing and has done some crazy things. He can even be considered an artist in his own field with everything he’s created.

  3. Hey Carbo, great post! I agree that futurism is the modernism of our era. That fact that Elon Musk is at the head of futurism is exciting but scary at the same time. I am all for advancements in technology, but as far as microchips in brains I can't get behind it. Technology is advancing exponentially and I believe that during our lifetime we will colonize Mars and society will have a longer longevity.

  4. Hello Connor,
I like how you chose to analyze an entire movement within Modernism as opposed to a single work of art. The fact that technological progress and innovation is a significant part of modern society makes Futurism very applicable to today.
